Asparagus season in Terlano from March 24 to May 25 – Eight Restaurants Participating
Terlan – In and around Terlan, the “royal vegetable,” Terlano’s “Margarete” asparagus, is once again taking center stage in the culinary scene.
Eight restaurants kicked off the traditional “Terlan Asparagus Season” with the official opening in Terlan’s village square. The participating restaurants are serving up fine and rich asparagus creations. This year, for the first time, two restaurants from Nals/Sirmian are also taking part. The specialty week is organized by the Terlan branch of the Hoteliers and Restaurateurs Association (HGV) in collaboration with the Terlan Tourism Association, the Terlan Winery, and the Terlan “Margarete” Asparagus, and was presented to the public yesterday at the Terlan fairgrounds.
Asparagus is harvested daily by hand and delivered directly to the participating establishments where it is processed fresh — a cycle that ensures the highest quality. “The Terlan ‘Margarete’ asparagus is a very versatile vegetable that can be prepared in many different ways. The participating restaurants will once again demonstrate this”, said Michael Fontana, HGV chairman for Terlan.
Numerous guests of honor were present at the opening, including provincial government councilor Luis Walcher, HGV President Klaus Berger, HGV Director Raffael Mooswalder, the chairman of the Terlan Winery Georg Eyrl, Mayor Hansjörg Zelger, the new Asparagus Queen Alexandra Maier, as well as other queens from South Tyrol and two partner municipalities in Germany. Also in attendance were two top athletes from Terlan: Sophia Albenberger, Italian, European, and World Champion in curling, and biathlete Christoph Pircher. HGV President Klaus Berger emphasized that the asparagus season is always a special time. “The Terlan asparagus season demonstrates once again how agriculture and gastronomy come together to form a truly successful team,” Berger stated.
Provincial government councilor Luis Walcher described the specialty weeks as a time of enjoyment but also diligence, during which hospitality and culinary art are experienced in a special way. It is the combination of local quality produce and products that defines South Tyrol. “The Terlan Asparagus Weeks are meant to be weeks of encounter and good food. Community and togetherness are at the heart of it,” said Walcher.
The mayor of Terlan, Hansjörg Zelger, looked back on 43 years of asparagus seasons in Terlan and highlighted its growth through the inclusion of neighboring municipalities: “Asparagus Season in Terlan is always eagerly anticipated with joy and enthusiasm. This year, we have also involved the neighboring municipalities to further drive its development.”
Once again this year, as part of the specialty weeks, there is a collaboration with South Tyrolean free-range eggs, which, like Terlan’s “Margarete” asparagus, bear the “South Tyrol” quality seal for produce.
A highlight of the opening was the coronation of the seasons new Asparagus Queen: Alexandra Maier. She takes over the role from Susanne Geier for the following two years.
Entertainment was provided by an asparagus-peeling contest featuring the guests of honor, before the asparagus season was officially opened with the traditional asparagus harvest. Together with the newly crowned Asparagus Queen Alexandra Maier and the coordinator for Terlan’s “Margarete” asparagus, Manfred Koroschetz, the guests of honor took part in the traditional asparagus harvest at the end of the event, thereby officially heralding the start of asparagus season in the municipality of Terlan.
A total of twelve asparagus farmers in Terlan grow high-quality asparagus on approximately ten hectares of farmland. “The asparagus thrives particularly well in the sandy, humus-rich soils of the lower Adige Valley. The mild climate also helps the ‘Margarete’ asparagus develop its unmistakably delicate flavor,” reports Manfred Koroschetz, coordinator of Terlano’s ‘Margarete’ asparagus and representative of the asparagus farmers.
The asparagus dishes are served with the excellent ‘asparagus wine’ from the Terlan winery. “The asparagus wine is a light-bodied Sauvignon, bottled specifically for the culinary weeks that pairs particularly well with asparagus dishes”, explains Georg Eyrl, chairman of the Terlan Winery. The Terlan Winery has been producing this wine for nearly 50 years now.
Following the official opening ceremony, culinary delights featuring Terlan’s “Margarete” asparagus—prepared by the eight participating restaurants—and wine from the Terlan Winery were served. The delicacies were served by students from the Kaiserhof Hotel Management School in Meran.
